Draft Youth Mobility CLP Motion
This Branch/ CLP notes that:
- Leaving the European Union has reduced opportunities for the UK’s young people, limiting their career prospects, and educational choices.
- The UK currently has youth mobility schemes with Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Korea, Andorra, Iceland, Japan, Monaco, San Marino, Uruguay, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.
- Youth mobility schemes differ from freedom of movement, as they set out strict limits on those who participate on how long they can stay in a country and what they can do whilst there.
- The European Union is clear a youth mobility scheme is something they wish to pursue with the UK.
This Branch/ CLP believes that:
- The principle of a youth mobility scheme aligns with existing Labour policy, offering a balanced approach to controlled migration, skill-sharing, and international cooperation.
- The Labour Party should support a Youth Mobility Scheme with the European Union as part of resetting our relationship with the European Union following Brexit.
Therefore, this Branch/CLP resolves:
- To write to our local Labour elected representatives and ask them to publicly show their support for negotiating a Youth Mobility Scheme with the EU.
- To write to the Prime Minister to ask that the UK to negotiate a Youth Mobility Scheme with the EU.
- To join the Labour Movement for Europe campaign for a Youth Mobility Scheme with the EU.
